Course Description

Second part of a two-semester sequence (PHYS 3210/3220). PHYS 3220 is offered in the Spring semester. Topics covered include:

  • Quantum statistics; lasers; physics of molecules.
  • Properties of solids, including electron band structure, superconductivity and magnetism.
  • Nuclear physics, including nuclear sizes and masses, stability, decay modes, reactions, fission and fusion.
  • Elementary particles, including strangeness, charm, and quarks. Fundamental forces of nature.
