Abstract: Quantum materials provide unique opportunities for observation of quantum effects at macroscopic scales. Their properties can be often combined in layered structures and are strongly sensitive to external stimuli suggesting a path for ‘on-demand’ functionalities. We’ve been focusing on expanding the material phase-space of these systems and also on finding non-invasive routes to probe their surface an interface properties. I will discuss our efforts on the synthesis and characterization of borophene, a 2D boron allotrope with a graphitic structure which has potential for technological uses, along with some ideas for device integration. Near-field optics is able to probe electron dynamics in layered structures in new ways. I will discuss the approach we implemented to look at systems such as unconventional superconductors and provide an example of generation and coupling to surface Cooper-pair plasma modes in an ultra-thin LaSrCuO film. We hope that these results open the path for further investigations of collective modes and enhanced interface superconductivity in hetero-structures.
