I will discuss the formation and development of the magnetic states in metallic magnets. A simple classification of magnetic materials from a point of view of localized-itinerant transition will be introduced and analyzed near local magnetic instability. I will show how any mean-field theory breaks down in a very wide range of itinerancy with the possibility of the formation of many magnetic states. A detailed comparison with our current understanding of the magnetism of Fe and Ni will be made. While the results can be obtained using different levels of magnetism theory this discussion will be purely qualitative and suitable for students in the magnetism area.
