Title: Hydrides from hydrogenations using gigapascal pressures – tapping into superconducting hydrogen dominant materials

Abstract:

Hydrogen rich or dominant materials – exhibiting unusually high hydrogen-to-metal ratios – have recently become a highly attractive research topic, fueled by the search for new high- temperature superconductors. Typically the formation of hydrogen rich materials requires the application of high, even extreme pressures, exceeding 1 Mbar (100 GPa). In this talk I will review recent highlights and then focus on the challenges associated with the synthesis of hydrogen rich materials. This includes especially their recovery to (near) ambient pressure conditions. I conclude with the discovery of BaSiH8 which presently represents the lowest pressure (< 8 GPa) high TC hydrogen dominant material.
