PHYS 232X/LX separate the lecture and recitation component from the lab component of the course in order to provide additional flexibility for students. The combined content and curriculum of PHYS 232X and PHYS 232LX is the same as PHYS 222. Students who would ordinarily take PHYS 222 as part of their degree program can take PHYS 232X and PHYS232LX in its place.

PHYS 232LX. Introduction to Classical Physics II Laboratory. (0-2) Cr. 1. F.S.SS. Prereqs: PHYS 221 OR PHYS 241, MATH 166. Credit or enrollment in PHYS 232X. Laboratory experiments in fluid dynamics, electric forces and fields, electrical currents, DC circuits, magnetic forces and fields, and wave optics.
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS ABOUT THE PHYS 222 TO PHYS 232X/LX TRANSITION
Q. What is the difference between PHYS 222 and PHYS 232X/LX? Is there any difference in the material that will be convered?
A. There is no difference in the material that will be covered in PHYS 232X/LX compared to PHYS 222. The combined curriculum of PHYS 232X/LX is the same as PHYS 222. Students with PHYS 222 required by their degree program can take PHYS 232X and PHYS 232LX as a direct replacement.
Q: Many students who have already taken PHYS 222 will want to retake the course to improve their grade. In the past, if students have passed the lab component of PHYS 222 they were given a "lab waiver" and only needed to repeat the lecture and recitation component; their final grade for the repeat was based on the repeat plus previous lab grade. How will this work with PHYS 232X/LX? Can PHYS 232X replace the grade for a student who has previoulsy taken PHYS 222?
A. There are two aspects to consider here - the first is that the course number and number of credits has changed. This can be handled within existing policies by filing a Designation of Repeated Course Form:
"Approval to repeat a course in which the course number or number of credits has changed must be noted on a Designation of Repeated Course form, which can be obtained from departmental offices. This form must be signed by the head of the department offering the course and by the student's adviser, and then taken to the Office of the Registrar. Deadlines for filing repeated course forms for full-semester and half-semester courses are published in the university calendar."
For a student who completed the labs in PHYS 222 and did well, but wants to repeat the course, the most straightforward way to handle this is for the stdents to register for PHYS 232X and PHYS 232LX in the same semster. Within PHYS 232LX, they will apply for a lab waiver with the Physics and Astronomy Lab Coordinator and submit the Designation of Repeated Course Form. At the end of the semester their PHYS 232X grade will replace their PHYS 222 grade and their previous lab grade will be entered for PHYS 232LX.
If a student wishes to repeat both the lab and lecture component in the same semester then the procedure would be as described above, with the exception that they would not apply for a lab waiver and would receive a new grade for PHYS 232LX.
If a student withes to repeat both the lecture and lab portion of PHYS 222 by taking PHYS 232X and PHYS 232LX, but not concurrently in the same semester, this represents an additional administrative difficulty. We are working with the Registrar to see if this option will be available to students.
