A Force Multipler for Change

Physics is a cornerstone of scientific understanding and innovation, empowering students to tackle some of the world's most pressing challenges. From advancing renewable energy technologies and combating climate change to developing cutting-edge medical equipment, physics provides the tools to create meaningful change.

Students of physics learn to think critically, solve complex problems, and analyze data—skills that are invaluable in addressing global issues such as sustainable development, technological inequality, and public health crises. By understanding the fundamental principles that govern the universe, students can contribute to breakthroughs that benefit humanity on a global scale.

The Physics program at Iowa State University provides you with the foundation you need to make a positive change, with it's proximity to research opportunities, the success of recent alumni, and endorsement by fellow students.

Do your interests expand beyond a general B.S. in Physics? Explore the Physics+ program options!

All of the Physics+ programs include a common core of physics and mathematics courses. The specific path you choose beyond the core physics and math courses will depend on your interests and career goals.

Physics+ Complete Program (PDF) Recommended for students planning on graduate studies in physics.

Physics+ Astronomy & Astrophysics Program (PDF) Recommended for students planning on graduate studies in astrophysics. Students may also want to complete a minor in astronomy.

Physics+ with Physics Education (PDF) Recommended for students interested in seeking certification for High School teaching in Physics.

Physics+ with Physics and Math Education (PDF) Recommended for students interested in seeking certification for High School teaching both in Physics and Math

The following program options are appropriate as part of a double major in another field. They are primarily for students ending their formal study of physics at the undergraduate level.

The Department of Physics and Astronomy is part of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences (LAS) at Iowa State University. For current LAS requirements please see the LAS Curriculum page.

There is a Communication proficiency requirement. The department requires a grade of C or better in ENGL 2500 (or 2500H), and a C- or better in ENGL 3020, 3050, 3090, or 3140. Students are also encouraged to study at least one foreign language.

Please see your advisor if you have questions about including physics as part of a double major.

The faculty are very kind and passionate. They are genuinely invested in giving a quality education and helping us find a way to achieve our goals.
