The Mal Iles Innovation Award


To apply for a Mal Iles Innovation Award, students are asked to submit a two-page application, plus arrange for one or two letters of reference:

  1. A one-page cover sheet containing a) your name plus all campus/Ames mailing addresses, email addresses and telephone numbers plus the date of application, b) the name, addresses, email addresses and telephone numbers of your reference. Please ask your reference to submit his/her letter by the methods and date indicated below;
  2. A one-page sheet describing your interest in innovation and invention. It is not necessary to have been involved in innovative activities in the past, but, if you have such past activities, please describe them. The Awards committee is interested in your present thinking and activities and in your future plans as they apply to the intent of the Awards. Your future plans may be in academic, research, or industrial settings or in entirely independent settings - all are acceptable.
  3. Please direct the attention of your reference to the Awards website or give your reference a copy of the website materials so that he/she can prepare the letter for you consistent with the intent of the Awards. Your reference should submit his/her letter using the same method available for your application submittal.

Schedule: The schedule of the Awards process is a) the application and letter of reference are due on March 25 annually; b) the Awardee(s) will be notified in mid April; c) the Award(s) will be presented at the spring Physics and Astronomy awards ceremony held annually in late April. Awardee(s) will be notified of the time and location of the awards ceremony.
