Nuclear Physics Seminars are generally held on Thursday afternoon from 4:10-5:30 P.M.
in Room A401, Zaffarano Hall. Special Seminars may be held at different times, so
please check the event listings for complete details.
Thursday, 16th Apr 2009 @ 4:10 pm in Zaffarano Hall A401
Mr. Feng Wei (Iowa State University)
Experiments since 1989 have shown the spins of the quarks inside nucleons account for only 30% of the nucleons' overall spin. The later SIDIS experiments show anti-quarks mostly carry anti-aligned spin. The recent longitudinally polarized gluon measurements at RHIC show that gluons don't have significantly large contribution on the spin of the proton.
Thursday, 23rd Apr 2009 @ 4:10 pm in A410 Zaffarano Hall
Dr. Bowen Xiao (Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory)
In this talk, I would like to start with the introduction to the AdS/CFT correspondence, and then briefly talk about its application to RHIC physics (energy loss and momentum broadening calculation). Then, the exact accelerating string solution of a heavy quark-antiquark pair in AdS_5 vacuum space as well as its connection with the well-known Unruh temperature is discussed.
Thursday, 30th Apr 2009 @ 4:10 pm in A410 Zaffarano Hall
Heli Honkanen (Iowa State University)
In this talk we discuss an exploratory Parton Distribution Function (PDF) fitting technique based on Self-Organizing Maps (SOMs). SOMs are a class of clustering algorithms based on competitive learning
among spatially-ordered neurons.
